Description

The 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T stands as one of the most visually arresting and collectible E-body Mopars ever produced. Launched for the 1970 model year as Chrysler’s answer to the Mustang and Camaro, the Challenger arrived late to the pony car party but made an immediate and lasting impression with its long, wide body, dramatic proportions, and an engine lineup that included some of the most powerful V8s available in any American production car. The R/T — Road and Track — package denoted the performance-oriented configuration, and 440 Magnum-equipped examples represent the most accessible of the high-output Challenger variants, delivering effortless torque and a commanding presence that has made them perennial favorites among Mopar collectors.

This example underwent a ground-up restoration between 2004 and 2008, followed by a mechanical refresh in 2020, and presents in its correct factory color of Dark Burnt Orange Metallic with a black vinyl roof and factory stripe delete — exactly as it left the assembly line in June of 1970. Panel gaps are tight throughout, stainless trim shows exceptionally well, and R/T badges appear fresh and correctly placed. The numbers-matching 440 Magnum V8 is fed by the factory four-barrel carburetor and exhausts through the factory dual exhaust with polished tips, mated to the original A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission. The A36 Performance Axle Package with 3.55 Sure Grip differential completes a correct and fully documented drivetrain.

The restoration was conducted as a no-expense-spared project utilizing NOS parts wherever factory components could not be properly restored, with careful attention to hardware finishing and correct overspray details throughout — including an undercarriage that presents as impressively as the exterior. Power steering and power front disc brakes round out the factory option content, while 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels on updated radial tires maintain the correct period appearance.

Inside, the high-trim Burnt Orange deluxe cloth and vinyl interior with bucket seats and console is taut and well-preserved, complemented by the optional Rallye Instrument Cluster that adds a welcome layer of driver information in classic Mopar style. Vintage Mopar Accessories splash guards, the original Broadcast Sheet, restoration receipts, and restoration photos accompany the sale — a comprehensive documentation package that supports one of the most correctly and thoroughly restored 440 Challengers available in today’s E-body market.
